Semantic and Stylistic Analysis of the “Naʿt” Category in Fozil as-Samarroiy’s Maʿāni an-Naḥw

Abstract

This article examines the category of the adjective (na‘t) in Arabic based on the work “Ma‘ānī an-Naḥw” by the prominent linguist Fāḍil Ṣāliḥ as-Sāmarrāʾī. The study analyzes the transformation of na‘t from a purely grammatical structure into a semantic and stylistic device. Special attention is given to the ten communicative functions identified by the author, including specification, clarification, praise, disparagement, compassion, emphasis, generalization, detailing, ambiguity, and indicating the speaker’s awareness. Examples from the Qur’an and classical Arabic discourse are analyzed to demonstrate these functions.
