Abstract

This article examines the use of the mother tongue in teaching English as a foreign language. The role of the first language in foreign language education has long been a subject of debate. On the one hand, using English as much as possible can increase learners’ exposure to the target language and promote communicative competence. On the other hand, purposeful and limited use of the mother tongue can facilitate the explanation of difficult grammatical structures, new vocabulary, and abstract concepts. The article discusses the advantages and potential disadvantages of using the mother tongue and presents effective ways of integrating it into English language lessons. Particular attention is paid to maintaining an appropriate balance between the mother tongue and English in the classroom.
