Abstract

The effects of the kinetic friction coefficient and the effective sliding-surface radius on the calculated dynamic parameters of single-curvature friction pendulum seismic isolators were investigated using an idealized parametric model. At a prescribed displacement amplitude of D = 0.15 m, normalized peak force, effective vibration period, and equivalent viscous damping were evaluated for nine combinations of μ = 0.04, 0.08, and 0.12 and R = 2, 3, and 4 m. The results showed that increasing friction increases the energy dissipated through hysteresis while also increasing the contribution of friction relative to the restoring force. The findings do not replace dynamic analysis of buildings using real accelerograms; rather, they provide an analytical and computational basis for the preliminary selection of seismic isolator parameters.
