Abstract

Social media has become an important supplementary environment for English language learning because it gives learners continuous access to authentic input, interactive communication, multimedia resources, and online communities. This review article examines the influence of social media on English language learning by analyzing both its educational opportunities and its limitations. Drawing on second language acquisition theory, sociocultural theory, and research on digital learning, the article discusses how platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, LinkedIn, and X can support vocabulary development, listening practice, writing, communicative competence, learner motivation, and autonomous learning. The article also considers challenges such as distraction, exposure to non-standard language, unreliable content, information overload, unequal access to technology, and limited digital literacy. The review argues that social media should not replace classroom instruction but can enrich English language learning when used purposefully and guided by teachers. The article concludes that effective use of social media requires clear learning objectives, critical digital literacy, responsible online behavior, and a balanced relationship between informal digital exposure and formal academic language learning.
