Abstract
This article highlights the role of critical congenital heart defects (CCHD) in neonatal mortality and the vital importance of its early detection. The primary feature of CCHD is “ductus-dependence.” In the womb, fetal blood bypasses the non-functioning lungs through the ductus arteriosus, which normally closes within 24–48 hours after birth. In infants with CCHD, this closure triggers the disease, leading to progressive cyanosis, cardiogenic shock, circulatory failure, tachy-systolia, shortness of breath, hypoxia, and metabolic acidosis. The article explains the origins, signs, and risk factors of CCHD, as well as how cardiological transformation affects patient survival.
