Abstract

Objective: To optimize surgical treatment methods for thoracic vertebral injuries.

Materials and methods: Forty-three patients with thoracic vertebral fractures were studied. There were 31 males (72.1%) and 12 females (27.9%). The age ranged from 18 to 60 years, with 29 patients (67.4%) aged between 25 and 45 years. All patients were admitted within 3–6 hours after trauma. The main cause of injury was fall from height. Uncomplicated fractures were diagnosed in 27 (62.8%) patients and complicated fractures in 16 (37.2%) patients. Diagnostic methods included radiography, MSCT, MRI, clinical and biochemical examinations. Percutaneous vertebroplasty was performed in 17 patients, while 26 patients underwent transpedicular fixation with ligamentotaxis.

Results: Positive clinical and radiological outcomes were obtained in both groups. Better correction of vertebral deformity was observed after transpedicular fixation.

Conclusions: Surgical strategy should be individualized according to fracture severity and neurological status.
