Abstract
This study was conducted to determine the species composition and taxonomic structure of pest moths belonging to the family Noctuidae (Lepidoptera) inhabiting cotton agroecosystems in Ulugnor District, Andijan Region, Uzbekistan. Field investigations were carried out during 2025–2026 in cotton fields located in the villages of Duduq, Fayzobod, Sariqsuv, Oq Oltin, Mingbuloq, and Nurobod. Insect specimens were collected using light traps equipped with DRL-250 mercury-vapor lamps, as well as transect and quadrat sampling methods. Species identification was performed through comparative analyses based on morphological characteristics, taxonomic keys, and international electronic taxonomic databases. The results revealed the presence of 15 species belonging to the family Noctuidae, representing 14 genera, 6 tribes, and 4 subfamilies (Heliothinae, Noctuinae, Plusiinae, and Acronictinae) within the cotton agroecosystem. The subfamily Noctuinae was the dominant taxonomic group in terms of species richness. Among the recorded genera, Agrotis showed the highest representation, comprising two species (Agrotis segetum and Agrotis exclamationis). Economically important pest species included Agrotis segetum, Agrotis exclamationis, and Helicoverpa armigera, which damage both vegetative and reproductive organs of cotton plants, resulting in significant yield losses. The findings indicate the establishment of a diverse complex of pest Lepidoptera species within the cotton agroecosystems of Ulugnor District. The identified species composition confirms their considerable economic importance and highlights the necessity for continuous monitoring and the development of integrated pest management strategies.
